Senior Health Center

The Nix Senior Health Center has only one goal: To provide elder adults with the special medical care they need and deserve. Nix Senior Health Center Medical Director Charles R. Cervantes, Jr., M.D., C.M.P., F.A.C.P. is board certified in geriatric and internal medicine. Dr. Cervantes is a board certified geriatric specialist and serves as faculty at the School of Medicine, U.T. Health Science Center at San Antonio.

The geriatric specialist, also called a Geriatrician, understands that special skills and extra time are needed to properly treat multiple medical conditions, so common in the elderly.

Who should see a GERIATRICIAN?

Generally, adults 65 years of age and older should see a Geriatrician. However, since we focus on maintaining independence and disease prevention, patients are encouraged not to wait until they are very sick to see a Geriatrician. Adults of any age who suffer from any of the following problems should consult with a Geriatrician:

  • Decline in being able to function on your own
  • Repeated falls
  • Older adults with a disability or illness, even in the early stages
  • Older adults with many complex medical and social problems
  • Caregiver issues
  • Dementia or memory loss
  • Confusion

What Services Do We Provide?

Our Geriatricians are experts in the following areas:

  • Coordinating care among specialists and physicians
  • Complete evaluation of the elder adult
  • Urine loss
  • Management of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
