Routine Laboratory Testing
Many doctors will order blood tests for their patients during annual physical
exams. These can vary depending on the patient’s age, gender, health
history, and risk factors.
Common lab tests include:
- Complete blood count (CBC) to check for anemia
- Urinalysis (UA) to monitor kidney function
- Lipid panel for cholesterol and triglycerides levels
- Blood glucose to measure insulin and blood sugar
- Blood test for sexually transmitted infections
Preparing for Your Lab Work
To ensure the most accurate and reliable results, check with your doctor
to determine if there are any special instructions to prepare for your
lab testing. Some tests do not require any special preparation, and some
involve abstaining from certain behaviors for a specified period of time.
In preparation for your lab work, you doctor may ask you to refrain from
any combination of the following:
- Eating or drinking (except water)
- Eating specific foods
- Taking certain medications
- Sexual activity
For women, some tests may require that they not be pregnant or menstruating.
Be sure to inform the person collecting you laboratory samples if you
have not followed the preparation instructions. Depending on the test,
it may need to be rescheduled. Contact your physician or our laboratory
if you have questions about your upcoming outpatient lab testing.
