In these minimally invasive surgeries, only a small incision is required.
Often used for diagnostic purposes on the abdomen and pelvis, a long,
thin camera is inserted to examine the patient internally. This type of
procedure also lends itself to other smaller, localized surgeries, allowing
the surgeon to operate while viewing a patient’s insides via camera
to minimize exposure.
A few examples of these surgeries include:
- Gall bladder removal
- Hernia repair
- Adjustable gastric banding
Open surgery is what most people think of when they picture traditional
operations. An incision is made over the area to be worked on, allowing
the surgeon to see the area with their own eyes as they work. Because
a patient’s internal organs are more exposed during open surgery,
there is a higher risk of infection than with laparoscopic surgery. Open
surgery also requires a longer recovery period. For these reasons, a surgeon
will often recommend laparoscopic surgery over open surgery when possible.
