What Is Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric surgery assists with weight loss by limiting the size of the
stomach, either with a gastric band or surgical rerouting or removal of
a section of the stomach, which reduces the capacity of food and helps
to curb overeating. At Nix, we specialize in adjustable gastric banding,
including LAP-BAND and REALIZE Band, which is adjustable and reversible
and typically involves far less recovery time than other types of bariatric surgery.
Who Is Eligible for Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric surgery is generally approved only for those patients who are
morbidly obese and have been trying unsuccessfully to lose weight for years.
The following conditions may make you a candidate for weight loss surgery:
- Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 40
- BMI greater than 35, plus an obesity-related condition such as type II diabetes
- Inability to maintain a healthy body weight, even on medically supervised plans
If you meet one or more of these qualifications, you are likely eligible
for bariatric surgery.
